In addition to munching on some Thanksgiving turkey, WUDPAC 2014 has spent the past few weeks beginning our study of Organic Materials with Objects Conservator Bruno Pouliot. We’ve spent our days working through the identification, deterioration, and conservation of plant materials, basketry, horn, shell, bone, antler, and ivory. Our classes have been very exciting as we have had the opportunity to handle many of these materials from the sample collection. We even were able to see a sword with a narwhal ivory grip!
We’ve also had some very talented guests, including basketmaker Ann Bowers and hornsmith Roland Cadle. They generously shared their craft and materials knowledge with us – and even brought some of their beautiful artworks to show us!
Natural history, leather, skins, and modern materials next!
